Credit repair is the correction of incorrect items on your credit report. Negative items on your credit report can cause you to be denied a loan, apartment or job. Even if you get a loan with poor credit, you will likely pay a higher interest rate. Over the life of a major loan such as a home or car loan, the higher interest rate can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. It is important to correct information on your reports that is incorrect if it is negative to avoid denials and high interest rates.
There are a lot of credit repair companies that will perform these services for you. Some are legitimate. Some are not. Both the Federal Trade Commission and the Georgia Department of Law warn consumers about credit repair scams. One way to avoid the scams is to consult with a licensed attorney whose background has been investigated by the state. Another is to do the credit repair yourself. If you would like to hire Nancy Burnett Family Law to help you repair your credit, we charge $150 per hour for these services. If you want to repair your own credit, the steps to take are:
(1) GET YOUR REPORTS: Getting your own credit reports from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian is free an easy. See FREE (really!) Credit Reports.
(2) REVIEW THE REPORTS: Once you have your reports from all three reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), review the reports for inaccurate information. Following are a few articles to help you:
(3) DISPUTE INCORRECT INFORMATION: Each of the credit reporting agencies has information about how to dispute incorrect information in their records:
If you want us to write a dispute letter for you, we charge $25.00 per letter ($75 for letters to each of the three credit reporting agencies if the error appears on all three reports).
